Volunteer Spotlight: Britt M

This month we are pleased to feature our beekeeping Class Assistant,  Britt McCombs, as our volunteer spotlight. She has been generous enough to share her bees' honey with us, and it's delicious! Britt is a class assistant in the daytime ESOL 2/3 class and has donated an awesome142 hours to volunteering with us, so far! She has become an integral part of the class, bringing her enthusiasm, teaching skills, and general support to the students. Kaeyoung, the instructor in the ESOL 2/3 class has this to say about her:

"Britt has been in our ESOL 2/3-day class since last Winter quarter, 2023. She has great teaching experience, and she is a very excellent teacher who can take the lead. . I have been much impressed by her sincerity and enthusiastic attitude toward all of the work in my class. She is super helpful with very thoughtful feedback and has lots of good ideas. She always welcomes students and really cares about them.  Also, She is kind, thoughtful, and respectful. She likes listening to students and showing respect and values the individuality of each student. I am so lucky to have her in my class and so grateful for her hard work."

Here is some more information about Britt:

"I'm a former high school Humanities teacher and current soap maker and shop manager for Seattle Sundries. I volunteer as an Adult Education Tutor through SPL. When our program was temporarily suspended due to the pandemic, I sought out other places to volunteer and was delighted to discover Literacy Source.

When I'm overwhelmed by news beyond my control, I try to find some positive impact I can make in my immediate community. Literacy Source has been an excellent opportunity to help. I'm excited for every class and look forward to learning more each week.

My favorite moments TAing are actually when the students help each other. Even when they come from different language backgrounds, they're often able to rephrase questions to help clarify for their peers. I also love getting to know the students' stories. Our most fun conversations revolve around food and family.

I'm a backyard beekeeper and an avid, though lazy, gardener. Happily, the bees love harvesting nectar from the flowers of bolted vegetables. My daughter graduates from high school this year; my husband and I look forward to seeing what she plans for her future. I hope my future will involve lots more teaching and learning at Literacy Source!"

Thank you, Britt, for all you do for our students, we are lucky to have you on the team!
